Papers comprised of military orders, an invitation extended to Hill's company, the Davidson Guards, to attend church services at St. Peter's Church in New Orleans, a receipt for rent of the Odd Fellows' Hall, an permit to the Davidson Guards to hold a m ball at the hall on December 27, 1861. Milton, Horace P. Letters, 1863. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Private, 47th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and clerk in the Ordnance Office, Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, in New Orleans. Letter written from an encampment at the Metairie Ridge Race Course in New Orleans, (April 15, 1863) comments in detail on regimental personnel problems and describes the cemetery tombs and the surrounding area. A letter dated May 8, 1863, describes health and weather conditions in New Orleans, the presence of large numbers of "grey-backs," and local excitement at the news of Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson's raid through Mississippi and the reception upon his arrival in New Orleans. Union soldier in a regiment stationed at Camp Parapet, near New Orleans, and Fort Butte-a-la-Rose (also called Camp of Fort Burton), Louisiana. His regiment was brought to Louisiana by transport ship. Letters describe the conditions of the regiment's camp, Confederate attacks on transport boats, and a African American regiment stationed near Camp Parapet. Slave children cartes-de-visite, 1863-1864. 4 photographs. Location: Misc.:S. Four cartes-de-visite feature images of Caucasian-looking emancipated slave children from the South. The photographs were an effort by the Union military, specifically the Department of the Gulf under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, and various charitable organizations who sold the cartes-de-visite to raise money for the education of former slaves in newly established schools. Another purpose was to inspire sympathy for former slaves and to raise Northern support for the war. Mss. 5319.

Organization established in New Orleans in 1889 to unite all associations of Confederate veterans, maintain ties between veterans, care for the disabled, collect data, and preserve records of service of its members. Certificates, receipts, and bills of lading. documenting business activities in occupied New Orleans, including the sale and shipping of corn and cotton and the purchase of groceries and soap. Paxson, Charles, died 1880. A slave girl from New Orleans carte-de-visite, circa 1864. 1 photograph. Location: MISC:S. Charles Paxson was a photographer in New York during the 1860s. He created carte-de-visite photographs and was one of a few photographers who took photographs of emancipated slaves for Major General Nathaniel P. Banks' campaign to raise funds for emancipated slaves in Louisiana. The carte-de-visite, titled "A Slave Girl from New Orleans" (1864), features the image of a very Caucasian looking African American, Rebecca, from New Orleans. Rebecca was a recently emancipated slave of her white father from New Orleans. New Orleans was under the command of the Union Army's Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. Rebecca was one of eight slaves from New Orleans to tour the North and raise funds for Banks' work in Louisiana. Carte-de-visites, like this one, were sold to raise that money and the back of the carte-de-visite states the sales money was "devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf."
