  • Roy, V. L. (Victor Leander), 1871-1968. Volumes, 1894-1913 (bulk 1894-1904). 7 vols. Location: H:12. Native of Mansura, Louisiana, an early graduate of LSU, and a Louisiana educator for nearly forty-six years. Roy was Louisiana's first agriculture agent. He formed the Corn Club, a youth agriculture group which developed into the 4-H club. Collection consists of Roy's personal diary and notebooks. Entries in the diary are concerned primarily with his activities in New Orleans, and his attendance at Tulane Graduate School, Marksville Academy, and Southwestern Louisiana Institute.   • Royce, James B. Letters, 1862-1863. 3 items. Location: Misc:R. Union army corporal stationed on the Gulf Coast during the Civil War. Three letters describing living conditions at Camp Stoughton, Pensacola, and Camp Parapet, near New Orleans. Scrapbook of newspaper clippings kept by Valle Rozier pertaining chiefly to Reconstruction matters in Louisiana. Some of the articles are written by J. Ad.   • Rudman, James, 1816-1894. Account book, 1844-1882 (bulk 1844-1848). 1 vol. Location: J:12. Blacksmith of West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, a native of Massachusetts; married to T. M. A. Norman. Account book containing records kept by Rudman of his service as blacksmith for many prominent West Feliciana families. He also did work for the jail, newspaper, and courthouse.   • Ruggles, Daniel, 1810-1897. Letter, 1861 December 2. 1 item. Location: Misc:R. Brigadier general in the Confederate army in the Civil War. Letter written from New Orleans to Captain George W. Holmes, the commander of a military unit called the Ruggles Guard, responds to a request for arms and comments on the social positions of the men in the units.   • Russell, J. Letter, 1863 April 17. 1 item. Location: Misc. Union soldier in the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Letter to friends describes an expedition through Mississippi led by General Frederick Steele and mentions Union objectives, destruction and confiscation of Confederate property, and the attitude of Union soldiers toward contraband slaves. John Russell was principal of Spring Hill Academy in East Feliciana Parish, La., for eight years, during which time he was also superintendent of public schools in the parish. Russell in Clinton, La., writes his young son, Francis I. Russell, in Bluffdale, Ill., describing his work as parish school superintendent, the outbreak of cholera in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana, the beginnings of the school system in East Feliciana Parish, flooding on the Mississippi River, and how he pines for his family and is anxious to return home once his term expires. The collection consists of a bill of lading for a river steamer operating in northeast Louisiana (1857), a conveyance for a land sale in Madison Parish, La. Russell from the Confederate States Army and a true copy of the same (1862), a letter from Harrisonburg, La., regarding seized property (1876), and a page from "The Franklin Sun" advertising a tax sale of lands in Franklin Parish, La. Correspondence from his nephew, Albert, principally concern with business interests in Eldorado, Arkansas, and New Orleans.   • Ryland, Robert H. Papers, 1837-1908 (bulk 1852-1885, 1900-1908). 103 items, 2 volumes. Medical doctor of St. Francisville, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and state representative in the 1870s-1880s. The related Wade and Brandon families also lived in West Feliciana Parish. Dr. Ryland's two medical journals contain entries listing names of patients, slaves treated, and medicine and treatments prescribed. Wade and Brandon family papers include bills and receipts for household supplies and letters discussing cotton prices. Collection includes a letter from a Confederate chaplain in Virginia to his sister relating the needs and care of Confederate soldiers. For further information, see online catalog.
