Description
Scouten, Arthur Hawley. Papers, 1934-1992. 0.2 linear ft. 18:4. Arthur Hawley Scouten, a writer and scholar, attended Louisiana State University, where he received his B.A. (1935), M.A. (1938), and Ph.D. (1942) in English. During the 1930's, he worked as an assistant in the LSU Athletic Department, managing Tiger Stadium during home football games. Scouten went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1947-1980. His research interests included Shakespeare, American literature, and 18th-century British satire. Papers consist of correspondence, printed items, and photographs documenting Scouten's career. Correspondence relates primarily to his work in the academic profession. There are also several letters from Russell Long. Later letters to his son, Lee, recount his memories of Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, and James Monroe Smith at LSU; and managing Tiger Stadium. Printed items consist of programs for professional conferences, news clippings, a 1935 voter's registration card, and several LSU football field passes from the 1930's. Photographs include a signed photo of Russell Long as a student, construction of a building at LSU in 1936, and several images of Scouten. Mss. 5049.

Bernard operated the A. M. Bernard Wagon Works in New Iberia (circa 1886-1958). Papers include business, legal, and financial papers related to the A.M. Bernard Wagon Works and other family concerns, including a syrup plant, oil and gas leases, sulphur mines, land holdings, and livestock operations. Included are a broadside soliciting funds for Methodist Episcopal missionary activities in Africa, and a map (1885) of Louisiana by the Bureau of Immigration. Provosty Arthur Davis served as Superintendent of Police for the New Orleans Police Department from 1954-1960. The James Brady Papers are comprised of legal documents from the 1986 Long v. Gremillion voting rights case, Democratic Party related materials, correspondence, and national convention materials from 1980-1996. It also includes application materials from his nomination by President Bill Clinton to a federal judgeship for the United States Federal District Court of the Middle District of Louisiana. LSU Pershing Rifles Records, 1940-1978 (bulk 1963-1971) Location 11:1-2.The Pershing Rifles is a national military honors society for ROTC cadets and midshipmen that participates in military drill exercises. It was established in 1894 at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. At LSU, the Pershing Rifle Corps detachment was established in 1940.The seven boxes of materials contained in these records were donated by a former member of LSU’s Pershing Rifle Corps. The collection is comprised of photographs, news clippings, magazines, instruction manuals, posters, bylaws, Gumbo yearbook page photocopies, scrapbooks, a guidon flag and a unit patch. All items date from the mid-twentieth century.
