Guess, George W. Letters, 1861-1865. 1 volume containing 45 items [photocopies]. Location: M:19. Confederate officer, prisoner of war in New Orleans. Photocopies of letters concern Civil War battles, the movements of Federal troops, health of his regiment, superior officers, Confederate currency, attitudes towards slaves, civilians, and Governor Allen's emancipation proclamation in Louisiana. Letters (1864-1865) from Alexandria and Shreveport concern his court-martial and imprisonment. Sherman, William T. (William Tecumseh). Letters, 1863-1889 (bulk 1882-1889). 6 items. Location: Misc:S, Vault:1, Vault MRDF 13. Soldier, president of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, and Union general in the Civil War. John Eaton Tourtellotte was his military aide-de-camp. Sherman's letters to Colonel Bingham, Charles Jones, and Mrs. Carpenter relate to his command of the Department of the Tennessee, his public appearances and social activities following his retirement from the army, and his plans to publish his memoirs. Included are three letters to Tourtellotte discussing Sherman's final tour of duty in the Northwest, a proposed overland to Vancouver, and the final illness and internment of Ulysses S. Grant. Sherman's letter from New York to Colonel Tourtellotte comments on the Count of Paris and the conclusion of his history of the Civil War, and expresses disappointment that he did not include the important battles of the West as suggested by him. Soldier, president of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, and Union general in the Civil War. Letters to his adoptive father, Thomas Ewing. The first letter states that Sherman's position in Louisiana is stable and that he will remain. A second letter reflects the political environment in Louisiana just prior to the Civil War. He comments that secession is imminent, and he states that he will not act inconsistent with his allegiance to the United States government" (Dec. 1, 1860). Speights family. Papers, 1842-1870. 1 microfilm reel, 12 photocopies. Location: MISC:S, MSS.MF:S. Stephen Alexander Speights was a resident of Lawrence County, Mississippi. Papers include family correspondence, chiefly between Lamon Speights and his son, Stephen Alexander Speights, including two Civil War letters; and a copy of birth, marriage, and death records from a Bible owned by Reverend J. D. Slay. Except for the two Civil War letters, all papers are handwritten transcriptions of the originals. Several letters from the papers are also available as photocopies. Collection is comprised of contact sheets created from 35mm nitrate film negatives. Contact sheets are arranged and labeled according their original roll numbers and contain images depicting the following: a parade celebrating Huey P. Long's election as governor of Louisiana (roll 5); Long visiting the LSU College of Agriculture and crops (rolls 6 , 10, and 101A); crops, U.S. service persons, and various buildings on LSU campus (rolls 101B, 101C, and 101D); Long's funeral services (rolls 102 and 103); and Long's inauguration ceremony as governor of Louisiana (roll 115). Additionally, there are photographic prints of select images from the rolls. Mss. 4033.
