Description
DeClouet, Alex, Jr. Letter, 1861 April 17. 1 item. Location: Misc:D. Son of Alexander Etienne DeClouet, sugar planter, state senator from St. Martin Parish, La., and Confederate congressman. DeClouet comments on the Confederate victory at Fort Sumter and recounts difficulties in raising companies in St. Martinville for service in the state militia and enlistees' statements that they will refuse to leave the parish if their units are so ordered. He also mentions his father's desire for him not to enlist yet and to stay home while DeClouet attends the Confederate Congress in Montgombery, Ala. Union soldier in the 12th Connecticut Infantry Regiment, which was involved in the siege of Port Hudson and a part of the 19th Army Corps. Describes camp food, living conditions and the dangerous local wildlife, deaths of men in his unit, the quality of the land for agriculture, the prospects of the Confederates surrendering Port Hudson, and Banks's refusal of a Confederate offer to surrender if they could keep their arms. Barstow, Henry. War record and letter, 1862-1880 (bulk 1862-1863). 2 items. Location: Misc:B. Henry Barstow served in I Company of the Massachusetts 4th Infantry during the Civil War. In 1863, he was a prisoner of war in Brashear City, La. He discusses his company's maneuvers from Lakeville, Mass. to Brashear City, La. and describes his experience in the prison camp and subsequent release. Topics include poor health and malnourishment among the soldiers; traveling on the Mississippi River; and general conditions in the camp. Confederate States of America. Army. Trans-Mississippi Dept. Bureau of Conscription. General order no. 6, 1863 Aug. 4. 1 item. Location: Misc:C. A printed act of the Confederate States of America Congress with a handwritten order from Brigadier General Elkanah Braken Greer, chief of the Bureau of Conscription, attached. The act repealed certain draft exemptions. The order is signed by William Stedman, a member of Greer's staff. Crawford, Octavia J. Herbarium volume, 1844-1845. 1 volume. Location: M:13. Volume contains copied poems and scientific and historical notes on selected flora from Jackson, Louisiana. There are entries (usually identifying genus, class, and order) for varieties of rose, hollyhock, butterfly weed, narcissus, catkin, nettle, daffodil, larkspur, tomato leaf, acerose leaves, hawthorn, muscadine leaf, and gum leaf. Also included in many of the volume's entries are pressed flowers and dried botanical specimens that Octavia J. Crawford collected. Mss. 5354.

Friends of Gillis Long. Records, circa 1966-1977 (bulk 1976-1977). 0.2 linear ft. Location: T:14. Records pertain to a fundraiser barbecue held by the Friends of Gillis Long on November 5, 1977 at the Port Allen Community Center. The fundraiser was held in preparation of U.S. Representative Gillis Long's 1978 re-election campaign for the Eighth Congressional District of Louisiana. Records consist of a binder (unbound) containing copies of correspondence to and from Gillis Long, staff lists, contributor and supporter lists, and fundraiser planning documents. Items of note include invitation letters from Gillis to Blanche Long, Katherine H. Long, Jimmie Davis, Mary Evelyn Parker, T. Harry Williams, Edwin Edwards, John J. McKeithen, and Speedy O. Strormann and Ludeling. Circular letter, 1805 March 1. 1 item. Location: Misc:S. Written two years after the Louisiana Purchase, this circular was sent by a German retailer to announce to Spanish-speaking businesses that the cession of Louisiana to the United States has opened the way to free commerce with other countries directly. The firm of Strormann and Ludeling established a house in New Orleans (La.) to deal in linens and other articles. Written in Spanish with translation provided. George Foster Shepley was a colonel in the 12th Maine Infantry Regiment, was appointed a brigadier general in July 1862, was military governor of Louisiana (1862-1864), commanded the military district of eastern Virginia, and served as military governor of Richmond, Virginia (April-July 1865).
