Confederate assistant quartermaster at Monroe Army Post and Shreveport, Louisiana, and agent of the Trans-Mississippi Department at Jefferson, Texas. Papers include requisitions, vouchers, and receipts for clothing, camp equipment, transportation, and medical supplies. Included are copies of official forms, routine correspondence from army personnel, and a few letters from soldiers. The impressment of cotton in Texas is discussed in two letters from Lieutenant Colonel W. A. Broadwell, Office of the Cotton Bureau, Headquarters, Trans-Mississippi Department. Papers contain law notes and a transcript of 'Fragments from a Collection of Letters and Notes of Nina Harper of New Orleans, Louisiana, 1861-1862,' that describes civilian life during the Civil War. A manuscript fragment of 'Legs joins the cavalry;' and some miscellaneous notes pertaining to Baton Rouge. Also included are broadsides advertising the Baton Rouge Female Institute, and announcing a Grand Fete for the Red Cross Society (1918), and a photograph of John McCarthney Taylor. Lane, Pinkie Gordon. Papers, 1925-2001 (bulk 1970-2000). 15 linear ft., 1 volume. Location: T:128-141; T:100 (short shelf); G:15; OS:L. African American poet, Louisiana poet laureate (1989-1992), and Southern University (Baton Rouge, La.) professor. Also the first African American woman to graduate from Louisiana State University with a Ph.D. Papers include personal and professional correspondence, writings, photographs, conference materials, printed items consisting of newspaper clippings, newsletters, programs, and fliers; and topical files that document Lane's personal and professional life. Her writings comprise copies of her poetry - some unpublished, book reviews, and an unpublished attempt at early prose work. Items concentrate on her African American colleagues and interest in African American literature and events. Lane was a resident of Baton Rouge (La.) since 1957 and accumulated a number of printed items for Baton Rouge events and organizations, including the Olympic Torch relay through Baton Rouge in 1996, and professional organizational newsletters for Capital Area Network. Welty, Eudora. Papers, 1951-1957 (bulk 1951-1952). Location: 7:28, VAULT:25, VAULT MRDF 17. A native of Mississippi, Welty (1909-2001) was a 20th-century writer. Thirty-nine letters, two postcards, and three greeting cards written primarily by Eudora Welty to John F. Robinson, her long-time friend and fellow author, relating primarily to their respective writing careers and mutual friends. It states that citizens are to be allowed within brigade lines only by written permission, that brigade officers must communicate the order to those their successors, that firearms should not be discharged except as required in the regular performance of military duties, and that officers in the brigade should remain in camp. Daughter of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, planter and politician Duncan Farrar Kenner and wife of Confederate brigadier general Joseph F. Brent. Two narratives of Brent's recollections of Ashland Plantation, including a sketch of slave Henry Hammond. She also recounts an 1862 incident in which her father escaped to Bayou Lafourche upon learning that Union troops were coming to arrest him. Three letters pertain to Rosella Kenner Brent's husband, Brigadier General Joseph L. Brent, C.S.A. A 1910 letter describes General Brent's service in the Confederate army. Pecquet du Bellet de Verton and Kariouk family. Papers, 1856-1991. 1.5 linear ft. Location: 49:14, 98:P, OS:P. French aristocratic family that emigrated from France to Haiti during the early years of the nineteenth century, and later moved to New Orleans. Pierre Paul and Pierre Francois Pecquet married two sisters, and lived in France and Louisiana. Writings are comprised of family histories, correspondence, and regalia of the Pecquet du Bellet de Verton and Kariouk family; and memoirs that detail historical and political events which surrounded the family from 1793-1989.
