Two accounts of Monroe's family history and career at LSU. One account describes meetings with Huey Long regarding LSU and the other discusses the controversy over the misappropriation of LSU grant money, and the ensuing investigation by Governor Richard Leche. Description
Kidd, Edwin. Family Papers, 1792-1994, undated (bulk: 1836-1884). Location: UU:63. Edwin E. Kidd was a lawyer, politician, and businessman. Kidd served several terms in the Louisiana Legislature. Papers include correspondence from Edwin’s father, Wilson M. Kidd, and then later, from Edwin. Wilson M. Kidd fought in the Creek War of 1836 as a volunteer in the Alabama militia. Correspondece recounts Wilson Kidd's experiences in the militia and Edwin Kidd's education, experiences in the Civil War, and post-war political career. In addition to correspondence the collection includes photographs, receipts, legal documents, and genealogical information. Mss. 5178.

Description
Bovee, Albert. Letters, 1870, 1889. 6 letters. Location: Misc.:B. Louisiana State Librarian and son George E. Bovee, Louisiana Secretary of State, during Reconstruction. Five letters written during Reconstruction relate to Albert Bovee's employment and financial affairs, as well as those of his son, George E. Bovee. He questions the hiring practices and financial dealings of his son, George, with the implication of political corruption and cronyism. He writes about George's gambling addiction, and he complains about the low dollar value of state currency warrants (Feb. 19, March 19, April 11, 1870). He also gives details of a séance that he attended (March 6, 1870). The sixth letter written from Nevada, discusses his financial affairs, and the people with whom he could reside if need be (Oct. 20, 1889). For further information, see catalog record. Mss. 5108

Description
Bonnet Carre Point batture map,1893 March 6. 1 map. Location: Misc.:B. George Grandjean was a U.S. deputy surveyor. A survey map with notes, titled "Batture Subdivision, March 1893," shows a compromise boundary line drawn between Glendale Plantation in St. John the Baptist Parish that was owned by George Sarpy and Hymelia Plantation in St. Charles Parish, owned by Joseph Hymel. U. S. Quartermaster Patterson. Letters, 1864-1865. 3 letters. Location: Misc.:U. Quartermaster for the U.S. Army 1st Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. Letters signed “your brother Patterson” tell of duties as U.S quartermaster, the presence of small bands of Confederate troops near Morganza, difficulties in the cotton market, the landscape and local civilians. He describes farmlands and the plantation house occupied by his regiment in West Pascagoula, and he comments on the plantation labor system and freedmen. For further information, see online catalog record. McVea, Charles and Lucy Hilliard. Papers, 1840-1998 (bulk 1866-1875). 0.75 linear ft. Location: UU:212. Charles McVea was a lawyer of Clinton, Louisiana. The collection is comprised of correspondence and the genealogy of the McVea and Hilliard families of Louisiana. Letters exchanged between Charles McVea and his wife, Lucy Hilliard McVea, comprise most of the collection (1866-l 1875). Letters offers insight into the daily activities and social life in Louisiana after the Civil War, as well as Charles McVea’s work as a lawyer. Correspondence also reflects the difficulty white Southerners had in coping with change after the war. Correspondents discuss personal news, health, weather, financial problems, travel conditions, and employing servants. Collection also includes a photocopy of The Arch of the Rainbow: Letters of Charles and Lucy McVea, 1866-1875, by Bena McVea Chambliss (1995). Mss. 5159.

Florance, Ernest T., (Ernest Tours) 1854-1918. Ernest T. Florance papers, 1916-1917. 8 letters. 1 photograph. Location: MISC:F. Ernest Tours Florance (1854-1918) was born in Pass Christian, Mississippi to Benjamin and Rebecca Florance. Florance was educated at Northwick College in London, and Lusher's Academy in New Orleans. He was admitted to the bar in 1875 and practiced law in New Orleans. He was president of the Commercial Law League of America. Florance also served as director of public schools in New Orleans from 1892 to 1898. The Ernest T. Florance Papers contain eight letters from Florance to Mrs. Norman Towne of Evanston, Illinois and one photograph of Florance. Topics discussed in the letters include World War I, New Orleans, Russia, travel, musical performances in New Orleans, art, classic books in Latin, and the Louisiana draft board. Mss. 5110.
