Description
Ashton Plantation auction broadside, 1859 December 8. 1 item. Location: EPHEMERA COLLECTION SUBGROUP III. Cotton plantation in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana, consisting of 1,800 acres on Bayou Macon and the Mississippi River. It was owned by Dr. William Webb Wilkins until his death (ca. 1859) after which it was auctioned to help settle his succession. Broadside printed to advertise the public auction of Ashton Plantation, which was ordered by the Fourth Judicial Court of St. James Parish, where Wilkins' estate was probably settled. The item briefly describes the real and personal property to be sold. Also listed on the broadside to be sold are ninety-eight slaves and their ages. Description
Hennen, Alfred. Papers, 1832-1866. 13 items. Misc.:H. Alfred Hennen was a prominent lawyer and judge in St. Tammany Parish, La.  Papers consist of letters from Hennen to his wife, Ann Maria Hennen, relaying news of the family, as well as five olographic wills of Alfred and Ann Maria Hennen (1832-1851).  The wills stipulate not only their inheritors, but also the conditions under which their slaves are freed, including whether the freed slaves wish to stay in the U.S. or go to Liberia.  Mss. 5220.

Description
Tureaud, A.P. Collection, 1963-1964. 45 items. MISC:T. A.P. Tureaud, Sr. was the principal attorney for the Louisiana NAACP, handling nearly all desegregation and civil rights cases in Louisiana from the 1940s through the 1960s. In 1964, he represented six African-American students in a lawsuit against the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors. These students became the first to integrate LSU's undergraduate program. This collection consists of photocopies of a selection of documents from the A.P. Tureaud Papers at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University. Documents include legal correspondence and court records related to this 1964 case. Mss. 5222.

James, John W. Papers, 1852-1858. 3 items. Location: Misc.: J. The papers consist of a plantation diary (1855-1856), an invoice for household goods (June 24, 1852) and a letter from the firm Simms and Cabin informing John James of the balance due on his account (Sept. 1, 1858).  The plantation diary reports the of plowing fields, and the planting and harvesting of corn. The back of the letter lists several slaves by first name. Mss. 3699.

Description
Uhler, John Earle. Papers, 1921-1960 (bulk 1931-1959). 13.4 linear ft. Location: 79:22-32, OS:U, 98:U. John Earle Uhler was an English professor at Louisiana State University from 1928-1961. His teaching and research interests included Shakespeare, 18th century English drama, English Renaissance literature, and linguistics. A public controversy over Uhler's novel Cane Juice, published in 1931, led to his removal from the faculty, and reinstatement six months later.  Papers include personal and professional correspondence; published and unpublished literary and academic manuscripts; and printed material, including newspaper clippings, newspapers, and periodicals related to Uhler's writing and interest in political events. There are also teaching materials from Uhler's tenure at LSU, and a small number of photographs and pencil drawings. For further information, see online catalog. Mss. 1902.

Description
Narrative of a Journey on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, 1839-1843, 1894. 1 v. Location: Misc.: N. volume is comprised of a narrative describing travel on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers from Opelousas, Louisiana, to Louisville, Kentucky. The unidentified author discusses fellow travelers, acquaintances, social activities and events, scenery, landscape, and conversations (Sept. 1843). William King, Mrs. George King and Henry Clay are among the many people the author mentions by name. The remainder of the volume is comprised of transcriptions of poetry (1839, undated). The front and back covers of the volume contain inscriptions by Edmona Walker King in which she quotes Cicero and comments on the origin of the closure rule (1894). Edmona Walker King was most probably a member of the King family of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Mss. 3540.

Wildman, John Hazard. Papers, 1849-1991 (bulk 1932-1980). 14.5 linear ft. Location Z:16-24, Vault:1, OS:W. John Hazard Wildman was a Professor of English at LSU from 1940-1981. His great-uncle, John Boylston Hazard, served as Captain of the 24th Alabama Infantry, Company I during the Civil War. Papers include correspondence, manuscripts, and printed material documenting Wildman's career in teaching and writing. Manuscripts consist of novels, short stories, essays, and poems, both published and unpublished. Diaries and personal correspondence describe Wildman's military service during WWII, as well as that of John Boylston Hazard during the Civil War. For further information, see online catalog.
