Confederate States Army Collection, 1863-1865, 106 items. Location: E:84, F:12, OS:C.. The Confederate States Army Collection contains orders, muster rolls, and other records created by various Confederate Army organizations and officers between 1861 and 1867. Most of the organizational records were produced by Louisiana regiments. The bulk of the collection is the papers of Major John Reid, a former Congressman from Missouri and leader of a company of Confederate volunteers, concerning the commissary supplies in Louisiana and Texas during the war. Carson, William Waller. Letter, 1923 Dec. 13. 1 item. Location: Misc.: C. Sergeant-major in the 4th Louisiana Cavalry in the Civil War. Letter recounts his Civil War experiences in northeastern Louisiana, the capture of Louis Dent, the brother-in-law of General Ulysses S. Grant, insubordination and discipline in the army, and the remedies used to prevent scurvy. Carson also describes a failed attempt to capture the United States gunboat, RATTLER, at Natchez, Miss., and he discusses the philosophy of slavery, particularly the fiscal aspect. Memoire : L'Etude des Sons du Patois Negre Louisianais, 1927-1928. 1 manuscript volume. Location Y:85. Judith Major was a public school teacher and later professor emeritus of French at Louisiana State University. This study, conducted by Major, examines the phonetics and pronunciation of the "patois negre louisianais," a French creole spoken by African Americans in Louisiana. Major utilizes an artificial palate and documents the sounds and movements of the mouth, using diagrams and photographs, while pronouncing certain words. Mss. 5081.

Pugh writes about the right to vote and literacy, presidential election of 1898 (Sept. 14, 1898, ca. 1900), and he refers to the mumps (Aug. 16, 1897) and yellow fever in New Orleans and Mississippi (1897-1898).
