Muller, Frederick. Papers, 1898 Jun. 30. 2 items. OS:M. Frederick H. Muller was captain of Troop E of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry (the "Rough Riders") during the Spanish-American War. Abstract of expenditures for the quarter ending June 30, 1898 shows the amount of ammunition used on May 28 and June 24 of that year. Quarterly return of ordnance and ordnance stores shows supplies received and used for the same dates. Both are signed by Captain Frederick Muller on June 30, 1898 at a military station in El Pozo, Cuba. Mss. 5248.

Collection is primarily correspondence between members of the Wall family of Clinton, Louisiana, particularly Mary Winans Wall and her son, Wesley Wall. Much of the correspondence relates to the family's experiences during the Civil War, including the deaths of three family members and the long imprisonment of Wesley at Camp Douglas in Chicago. Letters discuss personal news, mutual friends, daily life in Clinton, and Mary's efforts to have Wesley released during the Civil War. In addition to the correspondence, there is a school merit certificate, an essay written by Wesley, and a legal document from probate court in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, certifying that Isaac Wall is licensed to officiate marriages. Description
New Orleans Municipal Records, 1765-1898 (bulk: 1790-1837). 7.3 linear ft. Location: T:55-60, OS:N. Records consist of financial and legal papers created by the city governments of New Orleans. The papers are primarily the work of the City Council (or Conseil de Ville) and mayor. Some records date to the Spanish colonial Cabildo; most are from later years. A majority of the papers are in French, with a smaller amount in either Spanish or English. Financial papers pertain to public finances, including receipt and disbursement of monies, levy and collection of taxes, collection of fees on vehicles, markets, street peddlers, butcher shops, and city lots, and pay rolls for various public employees such as police and light service. Legal papers consist of resolutions and ordinances, which include records of legal matters settled by the council, and communications between the council and mayor regarding municipal affairs; and contracts and public works records, which include contracts for sale of property, agreements for the purchase of raw materials for street paving and other projects, and a small amount of material pertaining to the contract and purchase of fire protection equipment and services for the city. License bonds were issued for tavern keepers, boarding house owners, cart or dray drivers, and a small number of cabarets and coffee houses. Motte Family Papers, 1862-1921. 41 items, 3 v. Location: Misc.: M. A family of French and African American heritage in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. The collection contains personal and business papers of the Motte family of St. Landry Parish. Personal papers include a summary of birth and baptismal records for the children born to Blaize Motte, Sr. (October 15, 1862) and family letters. Some letters are in French. A French edition of a Catholic missal contains genealogical notes, v. 1 (1864). Business papers include a description of a tract of land purchased in St. Landry Parish (Aug. 17, 1869) and two store ledgers, v. 1(1865-1869; v. 2 (1867-1868). Ledger entries are in French. There is also a memorandum notebook (1897-1903), and several parish tax receipts (1906-1921). Mss. 3627.

Union Soldier William. Letters, 1862-1863. 2 letters. MISC:U. Two letters written by William, a Union soldier, to his mother and sister. Letter dated February 23, 1863 at Baton Rouge describes the unfamiliar weather, traveling on the Mississippi River, and the sight of hundreds of  "contraband slaves while marching in the streets of the city. A December 29, 1862 letter written in Philadelphia includes descriptions of life in camp, food and Christmas rations, the soldiers' treatment by civilians, and the layout of the city. Mss. 5234.
