[Growing up,] there were things like water fountains. Like “Black only.” “Colored only.” Or “White only.”
One of the things that was very evident was that public businesses were segregated. There were businesses
like Dairy Queen—sold ice cream and things like hot dogs and hamburgers, whatever. This was before Burger
King and McDonald's. Well, we couldn't go up to the front window to purchase anything. We had to go around
to the back to purchase what we needed to purchase. And even going to the doctor. If you went to a white
doctor's office, there was a white waiting room and a colored waiting room. And the colored waiting room
was usually around the back of the building. You got the same . . . Paid the same price, same treatment,
but you had to sit in a different place from the whites.
